Kathmandu: The government is considering banning the sale and distribution of alcohol for seven days before the upcoming House of Representatives election.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the High-Level Election Security Committee. A senior official present at the meeting said there was agreement that alcohol sales should be completely stopped for at least a week before voting day.

The House of Representatives election is scheduled for Falgun 21. The Election Commission of Nepal is expected to recommend the ban to the government. A final decision will then be taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Officials believe that uncontrolled alcohol sales could create security challenges during the election period. The move is also linked to efforts to manage Holi celebrations in the Terai, which fall on Falgun 19.

In addition, authorities have decided to close border crossings 72 hours before polling to strengthen security arrangements.

The measures are aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly election.
