CHITWAN: Mustard production in Chitwan district has been reported to have decreased, with productivity per hectare falling this year compared with last year, according to Nirmal Poudel, agricultural economist at the Agricultural Development Office.
Productivity per hectare was 1.31 tonnes last year but has dropped to 1.01 tonnes this year. Last year, 18,565 tonnes of mustard were produced in the district, while this year, 14,315 tonnes have been produced.
Mustard is cultivated on 14,173 hectares in the district. The main reason for the decrease in production is unseasonal rainfall, which forced many farmers to replant mustard seedlings. Fog and frost during the flowering period have also contributed to the decline in production and productivity.
Chitwan is one of the country's major mustard-producing districts. The number of farmers opting for mustard farming has increased in the district in recent years.
