KATHMANDU: Department of Information Technology has introduced new web accessibility features to make government websites easier to use for people with disabilities.
The initiative, launched under the Government Integrated Website Management System (GIWMS), specifically targets users who rely on assistive technologies, the Department’s Director General Shree Chandra Sah said.
Websites can now be operated using only a keyboard, allowing users to access webpage components without a mouse. A skip navigation link has been added so keyboard and screen reader users can jump directly to the main content and bypass navigation menus.
All significant images, logos, icons and service-related pictures on government sites now include alt text so screen readers can describe them. Error messages and feedback shown while filling out forms are enabled with audio support, and messages displayed after form submission can be detected by screen readers.
Input fields such as search and contact forms now carry clear labels and indicators to help screen readers, and visual focus indicators show keyboard users their current position on a page.
“Although these features may not be significant for general users, they are highly useful for those who depend on assistive technologies,” Sah said.
Officials said the improvements are expected to bridge the digital accessibility gap, make digital services more inclusive and promote technology-friendly governance.
