KATHMANDU: Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) has urged one and all not to disseminate misleading information. The ministry said its attention has been drawn to the publication and spread of baseless, false and misleading content on various online news media and social media platforms recently.

According to a press release issued by the ministry today, such fabricated information is creating confusion among the general public and giving rise to a harmful mindset in society. The ministry has said this risks weakening trust in information systems and negatively affecting social cohesion.

The ministry has stated that it takes the dissemination of misleading information very seriously and has asserted that strict steps will be taken to curb such activities. It has cautioned all media outlets, information providers and individuals not to publish or broadcast news and information that has not been confirmed by official bodies.

The MoCIT has warned that if baseless, false and misleading news is found to have been published or broadcast, the person or organisation responsible will be identified and strict action will be taken in accordance with the prevailing law.

The ministry has also urged the general public not to engage in any activity that may help spread misleading information and has asked social media users to check the authenticity and veracity of any content before sharing it through their personal accounts.

The ministry has requested that any information or complaints about misleading information or news be submitted through the Social Media Complaints Registration portal on the ministry’s official website. If necessary, people can also contact the ministry by telephone or email.
