KATHMANDU: A report titled 'Energy Consumption Growth and Export Strategy-2083 BS' has been submitted to Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha.
The document aims to establish the energy sector as a fundamental pillar of economic transformation and sets out a long-term plan to boost post-consumption energy exports by substantially increasing domestic electricity consumption.
A high-level study committee, led by Ministry Joint Secretary Sandip Kumar Dev, was formed to draft the strategy in line with the 100-point governance reform agenda approved by the Cabinet on March 27.
The strategy advocates a thorough reform of the transmission and distribution system and targets 100% household electrification. It calls for a gradual reduction in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) use by promoting electrical appliances and for improvements in meter and transformer efficiency.
Currently, per capita energy consumption stands at around 450 kilowatt-hours, with the potential to rise to 1,500 kilowatt-hours over the next decade.
The report also underlines the prioritisation of electric vehicles in the public transport sector and recommends the expansion of charging-station infrastructure to support increased uptake.
