KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane told industrialists and businesspeople in Kathmandu today that there was no point in being harassed or panicked while conducting fair business. He urged them not to cast doubt on the activities of the RSP and the government it leads.

Speaking at a discussion with representatives of private sector bodies including the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) and the Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) on Sunday, RSP President Lamichhane said the government must take a tough stance against businesspeople and elements who have held the national economy hostage.

He said the private sector’s problems should be addressed to develop the real economy and reminded attendees that the RSP had already set a roadmap for that purpose. He also urged industrialists and businesspeople not to visit leaders’ homes or party offices with complaints.

“You may have witnessed different scenarios in the past and even been involved in them, but this government wants to ensure change in a different manner,” he said.

During the meeting, FNCCI President Chandra Dhakal asked the government to help the private sector operate in a peaceful environment. “Private sector is under attack in every movement. We want such attacks stopped,” he said.

CNI President Birendra Raj Pandey warned of the urgency of encouraging the private sector as capital formation declines, while Deepak Malhotra of the NCC said he had expected much from the RSP government in development and economic reform.

In a separate remark, Lamichhane said the government would not leave citizens homeless. “Although problems surfaced at present, efforts are on to ensure a sustainable solution,” he said.
