KATHMANDU: Nepal has urged the international community to act together to prevent ongoing disruptions to global energy supplies and international supply chains, warning that the fallout is undermining sustainable development worldwide.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Shisir Khanal made the appeal while speaking virtually at a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on Saturday. Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York said Minister Khanal asserted that the disruptions had “dented sustainable development globally.”
Foreign Minister Khanal highlighted the direct impact of the conflict in West Asia on Nepali families. “The conflict in West Asia has directly affected the lives of families of more than 2 million Nepalis working in that region,” he said.
He warned that the smallest and least developed countries have borne the heaviest burdens from the crises, pointing to rising energy costs, falling remittances and a slowdown in tourism as factors that have hit vulnerable households hard. “In crises like these, the burden falls hardest on the smallest and least developed nations,” Khanal added.
The minister called on other countries and international institutions to respond positively and provide support to affected nations rather than leaving them to cope alone. He urged coordinated action to stabilise energy markets and restore reliable supply chains to protect livelihoods and development gains.
Nepal’s appeal at ECOSOC reflects growing concern among developing countries about the secondary effects of regional conflicts on global economic stability and on migrant workers and their families.
