  • Heatwave affects hilly and Tarai regions of Sudurpashchim; hot-day conditions in Lumbini

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has issued a forecast for Friday, warning of generally cloudy skies and isolated moderate precipitation across several provinces.

The MFD said generally cloudy conditions are likely over the hilly and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and other highland districts. Partly cloudy conditions are expected over the Tarai of Lumbini Province, while most other Tarai areas will remain mainly fair.

The division warned of a chance of moderate rain, thundershowers and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places in the hilly and Himalayan zones of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. The same precipitation is possible at a few locations in the Tarai of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki, and in the hilly and Himalayan areas of Lumbini and Karnali.

Heatwave conditions are likely to affect both the hilly and Tarai regions of Sudurpashchim Province. Hot weather conditions are expected in the hilly and Tarai parts of Lumbini Province.

For tonight, the MFD forecasts that generally cloudy conditions will continue over Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki. Partly cloudy skies are expected for the hilly and Himalayan areas of the remaining provinces, while most Tarai regions will stay mainly fair. There remains a possibility of moderate rain, thundershowers and snowfall with thunder and lightning at a few places across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki.

The MFD attributes the current weather pattern to the influence of westerly winds, local winds and a low-pressure area located near the eastern part of the country. Residents in affected areas are advised to take the usual precautions against lightning, sudden heavy rain and heat-related risks.
