KATHMANDU: Nepal is observing the 19th Republic Day with programmes being held across the country to mark the declaration of the Federal Democratic Republic on Jestha 15, 2065 BS (28 May 2008), when the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly formally ended the monarchy and set the country on a path from a unitary to a federal system.

Today, President Ramchandra Paudel said achieving good governance, development and prosperity is the nation’s urgent need and can be realised by strengthening an accountable, people‑oriented public service under the federal democratic republican system of governance.

In his Republic Day message, the President called for cooperation among all levels of government, the private sector and civil society to secure social justice, economic prosperity and inclusive development as envisaged by the Constitution.

He urged political parties, civil society and other stakeholders to contribute from their respective spheres to build a well‑cultured and prosperous society through sustainable, broad‑based and equitable economic growth while upholding Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity, national interests and pride.

He also paid tribute to those who took part in the movement for the republican system and extended heartfelt condolences to both known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause.
