KATHMANDU: Proton has committed Malaysian ringgit (RM) 37 million to expand its electric vehicle factory in Tanjung Malim as demand for its electrified models rises, the company and its Nepal distributor said.

The investment will allow Proton to more than double annual production capacity to 42,000 units, the announcement said, following a surge in electrified vehicle sales in Malaysia earlier this year. Proton reported a 329% increase in electrified vehicle deliveries between January and April 2026, with more than 11,617 units delivered in those four months.

Jagdamba Motors, the sole authorised distributor of Proton vehicles in Nepal, said the Proton e.MAS 7 160kW has received a strong response from Nepali buyers since its launch. A company spokesperson said, “The response we have received for Proton e.MAS 7 in Nepal has been very encouraging. It has shown us that Nepali consumers are ready for electric mobility and are actively looking for quality options. We are excited about what comes next.”

The e.MAS 7 offered in Nepal is a premium electric SUV powered by a 160kW motor and rated for up to 475 km of driving range under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC cycle). Standard features highlighted by the distributor include a 360-degree surround view camera, an innovative headrest speaker system, advanced intelligent driving technologies, and a spacious interior with safety and connectivity systems.

Early buyers are being offered incentives, including one year of free insurance, a one-year road tax waiver, a complimentary 7kW home charger, an eight-year manufacturer warranty, and cash discounts.

Jagdamba Motors also said it plans to introduce the Proton e.MAS 5 in Nepal soon. The e.MAS 5, Malaysia’s best-selling EV of 2026, is aimed at urban buyers and is expected to broaden Proton’s reach in the Nepali market.

Beyond Proton, Jagdamba Motors is the authorised distributor in Nepal for TVS two-wheelers, Chery Wanda commercial EVs, and JMEV electric vehicles, strengthening the company’s role in the country’s growing electric mobility sector.
