The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index decreased significantly by 82.77 points (-3.03%) to close at 2,653.40 during the period from June 10 to July 3. The market trended downward for most of the period, hitting an intraday low of 2,602.39 points on July 1, before recovering slightly in the final sessions to close at 2,653.40 points. Market turnover decreased by 12.79% compared to the previous review period, which had recorded a 37.45% decline. News and Highlights

On June 19, the government appointed Gopal Prasad Bhatta, former Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), as Chairperson of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON). The newly appointed chairperson assumed office on June 30, after taking his oath of office administered by the Finance Minister. The position had remained vacant since April 17 following the resignation of the previous chairperson.

Outlook

With the newly appointed SEBON chairperson having assumed office, one of the key sources of regulatory uncertainty that had weighed on the market appears to be addressed. However, decline across all 11 sub-indices combined with a further contraction in turnover indicates persistently weak investor confidence.
