Morocco consulate in Kathmandu marks 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI's accession to throne

KATHMANDU: The Honorary Consulate of the Kingdom of Morocco in Nepal organised a series of special programmes in Kathmandu on Sunday. The events marked the 27th anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI's accession to the throne, which is celebrated as the National Day of Morocco.

The day’s proceedings began with a flag‑hoisting ceremony at the office of the Honorary Consul‑General in Thapathali, Kathmandu. Chief Guest Mohamed Maliki, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Nepal, and Megha Chaudhary, Honorary Consul‑General to Nepal, officially inaugurated the event by raising the national flag, followed by the playing of the national anthems of Morocco and Nepal. The ceremony was attended by the Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions, business executives and other distinguished personalities.

To highlight Morocco’s cultural heritage, history and tourism, the consulate held a special exhibition at The Plaza in Lalitpur from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The free‑entry exhibition featured traditional Moroccan cuisine, pottery, Moroccan‑style décor, travel desks and promotional tourism materials.

"I believe that this exhibition is not only a platform to introduce Morocco's art, culture and tourism to Nepalis, but will also further strengthen bilateral relations, cooperation, trade and tourism exchange between Nepal and Morocco," said Honorary Consul‑General Megha Chaudhary.

The celebrations continued on Sunday evening with a dialogue programme on tourism and culture between Nepal and Morocco, accompanied by a documentary screening on Moroccan art and heritage.

Chaudhary, who is Managing Director at BLC Global Holdings, was appointed Honorary Consul‑General of Morocco to Nepal last Falgun. Since taking office, she has worked to enhance bilateral ties and tourism access. Under her initiative, visa arrangements have been updated to allow Nepalis to submit applications locally via VFS Global using a recommendation letter from the consulate in Kathmandu, removing the previous requirement for applicants to travel to India.

Morocco officially marks July 30 each year as its National Day to celebrate King Mohammed VI's accession to the throne, regarding the day as a symbol of national unity, stability and development.
