KATHMANDU: Incessant monsoon rainfall has triggered landslides, road subsidence and river erosion, completely blocking nine road sections across multiple districts in Nepal, Nepal Police said.

A Nepal Police notice said vehicular movement on the Khurkot-Nepalthok-Katunjebesi-Sindhuli section of the BP Highway, which links Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli districts, is halted between 6:00 pm and 4:00 am because of flood risk; vehicles may use the section between 4:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Traffic on the Kanti Highway in Makawanpur district is restricted between 5:00 pm and 5:00 am. In Ilam district the Mechi Highway is blocked at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality-9 after heavy rain turned the road muddy, and police said an alternative route is available for travellers.

Major obstructions have affected other key routes. The Araniko Highway is fully blocked at Iku in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-2, Sindhupalchok, after a landslide deposited rocks, soil and debris. Road subsidence at Liping in the same rural municipality has forced a complete closure.

In Rasuwa district, erosion by the Trishuli River beneath the Pasang Lhamu Highway at Khalte in Uttar Gaya Rural Municipality-5 has disrupted traffic on the Trishuli-Mailung-Syafrubesi road section. Police added that rain-triggered landslides or subsidence have blocked the Bheri Corridor in Rukum West, the Besisahar-Manang road in Lamjung, the Beni-Jomsom road in Myagdi, and the Khandbari-Kimathanka section of the Koshi Highway in Sankhuwasabha.

Nepal Police urged passengers to check road conditions before travelling and to take necessary precautions, warning that the risk of landslides, subsidence and river erosion remains high in hilly and mountainous areas while heavy rain continues.
