KATHMANDU: European Union Ambassador to Nepal Veronique Lorenzo met Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel on Monday to discuss bilateral cooperation in the education sector.
The meeting at the Ministry of Education and Sports in Singha Durbar reviewed long-standing relations between Nepal and the EU and considered ongoing collaboration in education. Both sides exchanged views on potential areas for future work.
Minister Pokharel outlined recent policy and structural initiatives aimed at reforming the education system. He said, "The Education Act and the Technical and Vocational Education Act have been implemented as key instruments for school education, and further revisions are under government consideration."
On the National Curriculum Framework, the minister said work is underway and added that ministerial initiatives are progressing in good-governance reform for technical and vocational education, clarification of executive roles, professional development for teachers and expansion of digital education.
Pokharel said his ministry is ready to work with the EU within an appropriate framework on the proposed reforms and has prioritised training Early Childhood Development teachers in early identification and screening for autism. He said, "We have prioritised training ECD teachers in early identification and screening for autism, and I am confident cooperation with the EU in this area will continue."
Ambassador Lorenzo said cooperation in Nepal's education sector remains a priority for the EU and pledged continued support. She told the minister that the EU is working within a 2028–34 framework targeting education reforms and confirmed readiness to assist in school education, technical and vocational education, digital education and teacher development.
