KATHMANDU: Heavy rain has caused landslides and flooding that have blocked roads in several districts, police said on Wednesday.

A report from Police Headquarters this morning said sections of road in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Rukum West, Sankhuwasabha, Lamjung, Ilam, Nuwakot and Makawanpur districts were affected.

Authorities have imposed night-time restrictions on some routes because of the risk of further slides and inundation. The Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunje Besi road in Kavrepalanchok is closed to all traffic between 6:00 pm and 4:00 am, with vehicles permitted between 4:00 and 6:00 pm. The Kanti Highway in Makawanpur is closed to all vehicles from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am. On the Tokha–Chhahare road in Nuwakot, public and private vehicles are banned from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am until further notice, with exceptions for essential services.

In Ilam, the Mechi Highway is completely blocked at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality-9 after mud was deposited on the road; officials said an alternative route is available in the area. The Araniko Highway at Kodari, Ward 2 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchok, is impassable after a landslide at Iku, and a section at Liping in the same ward has been washed away.

The Trishuli-Mailung-Syafrubesi section is blocked after the Trishuli River swept away part of the road at Khalte, Uttargaya Rural Municipality-5 in Rasuwa. In Western Rukum, the Jajarkot-Dolpa road along the Bheri Corridor is blocked by a landslide at Rijekar Ghat in Aathbiskot Municipality-6. The Khandbari–Kimathanka stretch of the Koshi Highway at Sirek Danda, Bhotkhola Rural Municipality-3 in Sankhuwasabha, has subsided by about 10 metres and is closed.

A landslide has also blocked a section of the Besisahar-Manang road at Rambazaar in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-4 in Lamjung.

Police Headquarters urged motorists to travel with caution and to use alternative routes where possible while the risk of landslides and flooding remains.
