
KATHMANDU: Nepal imported millet worth Rs 513 million from India in the previous fiscal year 2022/23.
According to Information Officer Chandra Kishor Thakur at Quarantine Office, Kakarbhitta, a total of 16,035 metric tonnes of millet worth Rs 513 million were brought into the country via Kakarbhitta customs point.
Likewise, pumpkins worth Rs 57.7 million were imported from India in the last fiscal year, according to Information Officer Thakur.
Similarly, chillies worth around Rs 200 million were imported through Kakarbhitta customs point in the previous fiscal year.
Fruits and vegetables including onion, tomato, long guard, yam, watermelon and ginger worth billions of rupees were imported from India in the previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, local producers in the eastern districts have complained of the limited market for domestic produce due to unrestricted imports of vegetables and fruits from India and other countries.

Vegetables and fruits worth Rs 6.29 billion were imported through Kakarbhitta border checkpoint, in one year.
Thakur said fresh vegetable worth Rs 3.35 billion and fruits worth Rs 2.94 billion were imported in the fiscal year 2022/23.
According to the Quarantine Office, 25,312 metric tonnes of onion worth Rs 809.9 million, 38,010 metric tonnes of tomato worth Rs 608.1 million and 19,988 metric tonnes of bitter gourd worth Rs 319.8 million were imported in one year. Onions, tomatoes and bitter gourds were imported especially from India.
Similarly, the country imported 617 metric tonnes of apple worth Rs 685.8 million and 15,531 metric tonnes of pineapple worth Rs 621.2 million in one year.
About 7,718 metric tonnes of oranges worth Rs 370.4 million, 3,072 metric tonnes of grapes worth Rs 196.6 million and 2,763 metric tonnes of pomegranates worth Rs 264.8 million were brought to Nepal via the eastern checkpoint.
