
JHAPA: More than 4.29 million kilogrammes of black cardamom, worth Rs 7.67 billion, were exported via Kakarbhitta Customs Point in Jhapa district in fiscal year 2024/25, the customs office said. This was the highest revenue from any commodity handled at the crossing.
Black cardamom is produced in the eastern hilly districts of Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur. After processing in Koshi Province, it is exported to India through Kakarbhitta.
Information Officer Ishwar Kumar Humagain said iron plate, tea and plywood were the major exports, followed by black cardamom. He reported that iron plate worth Rs 4.42 billion and tea worth Rs 4.21 billion were exported in the same period.
According to Humagain, tea exports rose by 32.5% compared with the previous year. Tea, black cardamom and ginger remain the key cash crops of Koshi Province’s hilly districts.
Plywood exports totalled Rs 3.32 billion, making it one of the country's top export commodities in 2024/25.
