BIRATNAGAR: An interaction on the findings and recommendations of a nationwide energy survey for industries and businesses took place at the Chamber of Industries, Morang (CIM) in Biratnagar, on Monday.
The session focused on energy consumption patterns, identified problems and proposed changes outlined in the full report by Inter Disciplinary Analysts (IDA).
IDA conducted the survey across Nepal in September/October last year in co-ordination with CIM, with particular emphasis on enterprises in Sunsari-Morang Industrial Corridor. Researchers examined power tripping, low voltage and voltage fluctuations affecting large, medium, small, cottage and traditional skill-based industries.
At the session, CIM President Nand Kishor Rathi said the survey data would guide the chamber’s future advocacy on energy. “Based on these findings, CIM will draw stakeholders’ attention to the improvements needed in energy management, raise awareness of the actual quality of energy received and work to enhance supply standards,” he said.
Dr Sudhindra Sharma, IDA’s executive director, explained that the study also assessed fuel usage, load-shedding and tripping incidents, and overall power quality. He expressed confidence that the report’s focus on measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption would support the planning of future interventions.
During his presentation, Dr Sharma recommended that policymakers tailor regulations to each industrial sector’s conditions, upgrade infrastructure for a reliable electricity supply and extend energy subsidies to protect smaller enterprises.
The event was attended by CIM Immediate Past President Rakesh Surana; vice presidents Bipin Kabra and Subodh Koirala; executive committee member and energy committee coordinator Santosh Kumar Bhagat; Jayendra Sharma; Birendra Rathi; Saurav Sarda; Siddarth Kabra; Kiran Vyas; Paras Golchha; Morang Chamber of Commerce and Industry Senior Vice President Anil Kumar Shah; and operators and managers from various industrial establishments.
