KATHMANDU: Asian Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs (AIDIA) held its third distinguished lecture in Kathmandu on Sunday.
Shishir Priyadarshi, President of the Chintan Research Foundation, was the keynote speaker at the event, which carried the theme “India’s Trillion Dollar Ambition: Advantage to Nepal”. The lecture highlighted India’s trillion-dollar goal and how it could benefit Nepal.
Speakers delved into India’s nearly $4 trillion economy and explored the opportunities and implications for Nepal as India moves towards a trillion-dollar economy.
“India’s journey into the economic trajectory that it finds itself on now is not merely national because it has become much more than that. It has become an inspirational journey and Nepal is part of that journey,” Priyadarshi said.
The lecture focused on Nepal’s opportunity for growth alongside India while showcasing India’s economic success. India’s rise will open partnership opportunities to build a stronger relationship. Both countries stand to benefit, and economic growth can amplify those gains, given their mutual respect and equal partnership.
“Why does India’s rise matter to Nepal? What are the implications? These are very important questions,” Priyadarshi added. “India’s trillion-dollar ambition must act as a catalyst for the region. Nepal is the most natural partner to which the outreach and benefits of this growth will accrue.”
He identified five areas from which Nepal could benefit: trade facilitation, infrastructure and connectivity, supply-chain integration, business connectivity and policy coordination. These advantages can enhance economic synergy and strengthen both economies.
“Opportunities do not automatically convert into outcomes. They may exist, but we have to work towards them to achieve results. We must make full use of the opportunities presented.”
“To align with India’s economic rise, Nepal can follow a few key steps,” he said. “Nepal can establish an economic forum between the two nations, operationalise low-hanging fruits, develop special economic zones (SEZs) in border areas, build a startup and innovation bridge and invest in better border infrastructure.”
On the occasion, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between AIDIA and the Chintan Research Foundation to establish a strategic partnership focused on enhancing regional dialogue and cooperation. The event also emphasised the future of cross-border economic engagement and the importance of policy coordination for deeper partnership.
