JALESHWOR: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced the immediate installation of 500 deep-bore water systems in Madhesh Province to tackle its acute water shortages.
He made the announcement today at the inauguration of a bridge over the Bighi River in Matihani Municipality ward 8 and a maternity hospital in ward 6, Mahottari District.
Earlier in the day, the prime minister conducted an aerial inspection of drought-hit areas in Madhesh Province, which was declared a disaster-hit zone for three months after a cabinet meeting on July 23.
The prolonged lack of rainfall has caused a severe shortage of drinking water and inadequate irrigation facilities across the province.
During his address, the prime minister said much of the land appeared parched during the inspection and pledged to hold discussions with stakeholders to resolve the water shortage as quickly as possible. He reaffirmed his commitment to secure drinking water and irrigation facilities in all eight districts.
He noted that Saptari District, on the eastern edge of Madhesh Province near Saptakoshi River, has faced fewer problems due to its proximity to the river. He added that the government is working to address the crisis in the remaining seven districts.
In view of the province’s disaster-hit status, the prime minister vowed to introduce a special programme to support those directly affected by water scarcity, including farmers.
Highlighting the importance of education, he said, “Where there is education, there is development. Where there is no education, there is poverty and deprivation.”
He appealed to residents to prioritise education as the foundation for poverty alleviation and national development, urging them to send their children to school without discrimination.
