KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a meeting with major stakeholders on Thursday to address issues affecting victims of financial cooperatives.
The meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office was attended by Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Anil Kumar Sinha; Ministry Secretary Kedar Nath Sharma; Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Raj Kumar Shrestha; chair of Problematic Cooperatives Management Committee; office-bearers of Cooperatives Regulation Authority; and representatives of cooperative organisations’ victim depositors.
At the meeting, the prime minister said those involved in the cooperative scam must not be spared at any cost. “The fraudsters cannot be freed. Rather, we will amend the laws if that is deemed necessary. Let us do whatever is required, but let us not spare the fraudsters. Let us end the trend of traumatising the victims,” she added.
The prime minister emphasised that the government’s major tasks include holding elections, punishing those involved in corruption and resolving the issues of cooperative organisations. “We came to government for the same responsibilities,” PM Karki said.
The prime minister was of the view that victims’ deposits should be returned even if it means auctioning the properties of those responsible.
