KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal on Wednesday urged that the federation’s next leadership be chosen by consensus. He said agreement within the private sector body is essential to strengthen institutional unity.

Speaking at a programme in Lalitpur to mark the 59th anniversary of  Lalitpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dhakal said that selecting leaders through 'agreement and cooperation' would make FNCCI more powerful and effective as a common organisation for the private sector.

Dhakal called for developing Lalitpur as a hub for original local products while maintaining quality and scaling up production. “There is great potential to increase exports if we can promote traditional skills, arts, and local products here. However, to connect original products with the international market, it is necessary to increase quantity along with quality,” he said.

He urged greater investment in manufacturing, wider use of technology and market expansion to boost exports. He stressed the need to strengthen the chain from production to market through coordination among local governments, the private sector and the central government. Dhakal also praised LCCI’s role in entrepreneurship development, job creation and broader economic progress.

On policy, Dhakal said reforms are indispensable to create an industrial environment, calling for investment‑friendly policies, a simpler tax system, improved infrastructure and reduced administrative hurdles. He added that the state must listen seriously to the private sector and ensure its effective participation in policy‑making, and that the private sector should “speak with a single voice.”

Dhakal also announced that the FNCCI statute has been amended to reflect demands and suggestions from district and municipal levels. He expressed confidence that the changes will make the federation more inclusive and representative, increasing the participation of district, municipal and women entrepreneurs.
