Jhapa: Business activity in Jhapa district has seen steady growth, with 717 new cottage and small industries registered in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2025/26.
According to the Cottage and Small Industries Office in Jhapa, 316 of the newly registered enterprises fall under the industrial category, while 401 are commercial firms.
During the same period, a large number of existing businesses renewed their registration. The office reported that 635 industries and 627 commercial firms completed their renewals, showing continued engagement from local entrepreneurs.
However, not all businesses managed to sustain operations. A total of 213 enterprises were officially closed, including 125 industries and 88 commercial firms.
The data also shows changes within the business sector. Over the review period, 12 industries were relocated, 33 changed ownership, and 23 were rebranded with new names. In addition, 39 businesses expanded their objectives, indicating efforts to grow or diversify operations.
Information Officer Khina Timilsina noted that the number of businesses formally shutting down remains relatively low. However, many enterprises that fail to renew their registration on time are likely no longer in operation.
Meanwhile, the office collected more than Rs 13.56 million in revenue from registration, renewal and other services during the period.
Overall, the figures reflect a mixed picture of growth and challenges, with new businesses emerging while others struggle to continue.
