Tea exports rise 40.5 pc in 11 months of current FY

BHADRAPUR, JHAPA: Exports of tea have risen by 40.5% in the first 11 months of current fiscal year 2024/25. According to the Mechi Customs Office, tea worth Rs 3.86 billion had been exported by Ashad (mid-June), with 14,463.33 tonnes shipped, said Ishwar Kumar Humagain, information officer at the office.

To date in fiscal year 2024/25, tea exports total Rs 2.75 billion. Office statistics show cardamom exports have fallen by 3.8% up to the end of Jestha (mid-June), with shipments valued at Rs 7.18 billion in the same period. By contrast, in fiscal year 2023/24 cardamom worth Rs 7.45 billion was exported over the equivalent 11 months.

The principal export items were veneer sheets (67% of total value), plywood (11.6%), iron sheets (9.6%) and molasses, which saw a 400.5% increase, the office said. Exports of cement clinker fell by 12.6%, ginger by 59.7%, Amliso (broom grass) by 15.2% and Chhurpi (traditional hardened yak cheese) by 7.7%. Overall, goods worth over Rs 23.28 billion were exported through Mechi Customs in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year.
