KATHMANDU: Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) today urged the government to make arrangements to restore electricity infrastructure damaged by flooding that entered Nepal from Tibet via the Lhende stream into the Bhotekoshi River on Tuesday.

In a press release, IPPAN called on the government to ensure policy and procedural facilitation for the reconstruction of damaged structures, to enable power production and transmission, and to implement measures to prevent further potential losses.

The disaster has damaged more than 10 hydropower projects, including those under construction in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.

According to IPPAN, the flood has forced projects with a combined capacity of around 250 MW offline, while construction on schemes totalling over 350 MW has been suspended.

IPPAN President Ganesh Karki said projects halted by the production shutdown include 111 MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, 60 MW Trishuli-3A, 25 MW Trishuli Hydropower Station, 22 MW Chilime Hydropower Project, 14 MW Upper Mailung, 14 MW Devighat Hydropower Project and 5 MW Mailung Khola Hydropower Project.

Kaeki added that construction of several other schemes – notably the 216 MW Upper Trishuli-I, 100 MW Super Trishuli and 37 MW Trishuli-3B Hydropower Project – has also been halted by the disaster.
