Snow, moderate rain, heatwave likely in Himalayan, hilly, Tarai regions today

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has issued a forecast for Sunday, warning of cloudy skies, isolated moderate rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, and heatwave conditions in parts of Nepal.

The MFD said generally cloudy conditions are likely over Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Partly cloudy skies are expected across the hilly and Himalayan areas of the remaining provinces, including Madhesh, while most Tarai areas will remain mainly fair.

There is a chance of moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunder and lightning at several locations in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki. Similar conditions may occur at one or two places in the Tarai regions of Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki, and in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim.

Hot day conditions are expected in the hilly regions, and heatwave conditions may develop in the Tarai areas of Sudurpashchim and Lumbini. The MFD also warned of possible windstorms at a few places in the Tarai areas of Madhesh and Koshi.

For tonight, the agency forecasts generally cloudy skies over Koshi and the remaining Himalayan regions. Partly cloudy conditions are likely over the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini and in Madhesh, while the remaining hilly and Tarai regions will be mainly fair.

The MFD added that moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunder and lightning could occur at a few places in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki, and at one or two places in the Himalayan regions of Lumbini and Karnali, including parts of Madhesh.

In its meteorological analysis, the MFD said Nepal is under the influence of westerly and local winds and a low-pressure area near the eastern region of the country.
